Excerpt from Workshop Appliances: Including Descriptions of the Gauging and Measuring Instruments, Hand Cutting Tools, Lathes, Drilling, Planning, and Other Machine-Tools Used by EngineersThe favourable reception accorded both at home and abroad to the previous editions of 'Workshop Appliances,' coupled with the demand for a new issue, have decided the Author upon now undertaking its revision throughout. In doing this he has endeavoured, by shortening the descriptions in some instances, and in others by substituting for them diagrams or drawings - the 'Alphabet of the Engineer,' as the latter have well been called - to find space for a larger amount of new matter than the mere addition to the number of pages would indicate.
The few original paragraphs relating to steel have been expanded into a supplementary chapter, containing several illustrations, which - like the generality of the engravings throughout the book - have been carefully engraved by Mr. G. Pearson, from photographs or original drawings.
It is hoped that these alterations will render the book more complete and more useful both to students and to workmen. The latter have frequently borne gratifying testimony to its value, and have made various suggestions to the Author, which have not been overlooked in the revision.
